Box Office: 'Last Jedi,' 'Jumanji' Rule Christmas; 'Downsizing' Bombs
Courtesy of Paramount Pictures
'Downsizing'
'The Post' prospers, while the verdict is out on 'Pitch Perfect 3' and 'The Greatest Showman.' A holiday loser is 'Father Figures.'
Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle are the biggest winners of the holiday box-office feast, while at the other end of the Christmas table Alexander Payne's Downsizing and the R-rated Father Figures are fighting for scraps.
Moviegoing always dips on Christmas Eve, but traffic will pick up in earnest later on Monday once presents are unwrapped. The corridor between Christmas Day and New Year's Day is the most lucrative stretch of the year. This year is especially important if the revenue gap at the domestic box office is to come in only 1 or 2 percent behind 2016's record $11.4 billion.
Disney and Lucasfilm's The Last Jedi grossed $100.7 million from 4,232 theaters for the long holiday weekend (Friday to Monday), pushing its domestic total to $397.3 million. Through Sunday, the film's global haul is a mighty $745.5 million after earning another $75.1 million this weekend from 54 foreign markets, helping Disney jump the $6 billion mark at the global box office for the second time — a feat no other studio has accomplished.........

'The Conformist' ('Bing Zhi Xia'): Film Review
Courtesy of Tokyo FilmEx
Chinese star Huang Bo secured a prize in Shanghai for his turn as a ruffian drifting across jobs and cities in the Sino-Russian borderlands.
After The Conformist's Tokyo FilmEx screening, a viewer asked director Cai Shangjun whether film noir is a genre on the rise in Chinese cinema. It's not hard to see why. Cai's third and latest feature, which bowed at FilmEx alongside Vivian Qu's noir-inflected Angels Wear White, is a finely crafted tale in which a hard-boiled hoodlum contends with myriad criminals, multiple conspiracies and an icy femme fatale in bleak border outposts in China and Russia.
Though The Conformist's story and visual style bear scant resemblance to Bernando Bertolucci's thriller of the same name, Cai has acquitted himself with many of the same elements that propelled that 1970 film to legendary status. There's the lead actor's stellar performance, with Huang Bo (Lost in Thailand, Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons) delivering a nuanced, measured turn in perhaps his most against-type role to date. Then there's the sight and sound: Hong Kong D.P. Yu Lik-wai teases out an eerie sense of beauty from the film's gloomy architecture and snowy landscapes, while Qin Wenchen's score and Wen Bo's sound effects further augment the ambience.........

Padmavati row: ''Deepika should know how it feels like to be burnt alive''
Deepika Padukone in Padmavati
Meanwhile, the film fraternity has come out in support of Bhansali and the team, with many leading artistes calling it an attack on creative freedom.
Padmavati row doesn't seems to end anytime soon. After the release date of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film has been postponed, the makers and the stars are getting threats from many fringe outfits. A group has now targeted actress Deepika Padukone, announcing a reward of Rs 1 crore for anyone "burning her alive".

'Amanda & Jack Go Glamping': Film Review | Napa Valley 2017
Courtesy of Napa Valley Film Festival
David Arquette and Amy Acker co-star in Brandon Dickerson’s comedy about a couple attempting to get their marriage back on track.
After devastating wildfires swept Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino counties last month, the Nov. 8-12 Napa Valley Film Festival posted a banner notice on the fest’s homepage that answered a question on many people’s minds: “NVFF17 will go on as scheduled.” NVFF co-founders/directors Marc and Brenda Lhormer followed up with a statement indicating “Our intention is to put on the most memorable and meaningful film festival to date,” along with plans to donate a percentage of festival pass sales revenue to the Napa Valley Community Foundation’s Disaster Relief Fund.
Among the films screening on NVFF’s opening night, Brandon Dickerson’s third feature gives voice to a generational faction fed up with the digital revolution and more comfortable with an analog environment, tracking a married couple’s attempts to reanimate their marriage on a “glamorous camping” trip. Fitfully amusing and occasionally grating, Amanda & Jack Go Glamping succeeds best when it focuses on its protagonists’ unique shared experiences rather than the overly familiar conflicts of partners in crisis......
