'Burning'

The South Korean film starring Steven Yeun will open in US theaters beginning on Oct. 28.

Well Go USA announced Friday that it acquired North American distribution rights to Cannes-winning film Burning. The South Korean film starring Walking Dead star Steven Yeun will open across U.S. theaters across beginning Oct. 26 in New York City, with expansion to follow throughout November.

The deals follows on the heels of sales in May to already a number of territories including China. U.K., Australia, France, Spain and Japan. Earlier sales were made following Burning's critically acclaimed premiere at the Cannes Film Festival where it won the FIPRESCI International Critics’ Prize.....

Universal and Amblin have claimed Hollywood's fourth-biggest opening ever in China.

Universal and Amblin's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom opened with a roar at the Chinese box office over the weekend, earning $111.9 million.

It was Universal’s second-biggest debut ever in the market, behind only The Fate Of The Furious. The opening was also considerably better than the $99.2 million the first Jurassic World film earned in its first full week in Chinese cinemas in 2015 (openings were tallied by the week rather than weekend back then).

The dino tentpole also pulled in $10 million from 520 IMAX screens. Altogether it claimed over 75 percent of the weekend's total ticket revenue in China..........

Juliette Binoche gets to see the ‘real’ Japan in ‘Vision’

“It’s so warm in here!” exclaims Juliette Binoche. “You know in (Michael) Haneke’s film, I have a scene where I kind of suffocate and I think that I’m going to die? It feels like that! Do you think you can open the window?”

The grande dame of French cinema has suffered for her art — she nearly drowned during the filming of Leos Carax’s “The Lovers on the Bridge” — but the stuffy hotel room where she’s conducting interviews today has apparently pushed her to the brink.

“The air, for me, it’s vital,” she explains. “We’ve been working in a forest for two months!”

She’s referring to “Vision,” the new film from award-winning director Naomi Kawase. Binoche plays a French essayist, Jeanne, who journeys into the forests of Nara Prefecture to search for a mysterious herb that only appears once every 997 years. Once there, she falls into a relationship with a taciturn ranger, Tomo (Masatoshi Nagase), but it slowly transpires that she’s also mourning the loss of an earlier love.

The project was born at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, where Kawase’s “Radiance” (“Hikari”) was screening in competition. When the director ended up sat at the same table as French producer Marianne Slot during an official dinner, they started plotting to work together............

Elsewhere, indie horror pic 'Hereditary' survives a D+ CinemaScore with a strong $13 million debut, while Jodie Foster's 'Hotel Artemis' bombs with $3.2 million; overseas, 'Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom' roars to $151 million.

Proving that fanboy-centric tentpoles aren't the only summer box-office jewels, the female-fronted Ocean's 8 opened over the weekend to a series-best $41.5 million from 4,145 theaters to easily place No. 1 in North America.

Overseas, the pic grossed $12.2 million from its first 16 markets, many of them in Latin America, for a global start of $53.7 million.

The movie's debut is a victory for the slew of gender-swapping spinoffs and remakes being plotted by Hollywood studios, and launches two years after the big-budget, female-led Ghostbusters reboot ultimately lost money despite a $46 million opening. 

From Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow, Ocean's 8 stars Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna and Helena Bonham Carter. The movie scored one of the top 10 openings of the year to date, matching the likes of the far more expensive Ready Player One.

A STAR IS BORN - Official Trailer 1

 “A Star is Born” stars four-time Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper (“American Sniper,” “American Hustle,” “Silver Linings Playbook”) and multiple award-winning, Oscar-nominated music superstar Lady Gaga, in her first leading role in a major motion picture. Cooper helms the drama, marking his directorial debut. 

In this new take on the tragic love story, he plays seasoned musician Jackson Maine, who discovers—and falls in love with—struggling artist Ally (Gaga). She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer... until Jack coaxes her into the spotlight. But even as Ally’s career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jack fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons. 

The cast of “A Star is Born” also includes Andrew Dice Clay, with Dave Chappelle and Sam Elliott. 

In addition to playing Ally, Gaga, who earned her Oscar nod for the song “Til It Happens to You” from “The Hunting Ground,” performs original songs in the film, which she wrote with Cooper and a handful of artists, including Lukas Nelson, Jason Isbell and Mark Ronson. All the music is original and was recorded live.
