A 'Mission: Impossible' Refresher Before 'Fallout'

Photofest
1996's 'Mission: Impossible'

The sixth installment of the Tom Cruise franchise requires a little more knowledge than usual going in.

In 1996, Tom Cruise chose to accept his first mission.

Since then, the Mission: Impossible series has grossed $2.7 billion worldwide and has become known as one of the most ambitious action franchises around. Part of the series' draw has been Cruise's insistence on performing his own stunts, as well as the way each mission rarely requires knowledge about the previous installments. But reviews for Mission: Impossible – Fallout have revealed that there are more connective threads and callbacks to the other films than in any of the previous five movies. Here is a quick synopsis of what's happened so far in Ethan Hunt's Mission: Impossible life in case you need a refresher course on the plot.

Mission: Impossible (1996)
Director: Brian De Palma

Cruise introduces the world to Ethan Hunt, a young hotshot agent in the IMF (Impossible Missions Force) a fictional U.S. government designed to carry out classified missions by a team of highly trained a capable agents. Hunt's entire team is wiped out during a routine mission. The deaths seemingly include Hunt's mentor, Jim Phelps (Jon Voight), but when the dust settles, the leader of his agency suspect Hunt was the culprit, and he is left on his own to avenge his team and clear his name, with help from series mainstay Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) and after conning arms dealer Max (Vanessa Redgrave). Eventually, Hunt discovers Phelps staged his own death, set up his protege to take the fall, and was going to retire after stealing classified documents he planned to sell to the highest bidder. Hunt is able to kill Phelps, recover the list of classified agents, and clear his name in the process......

'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' Honors the Past to Look Toward the Future

Mothra, King Ghidorah and Rodan make appearances in the first trailer from the sequel.

Godzilla’s iconic roar shook San Diego Comic-Con's Hall H on Saturday as Warner Bros. unleashed the first trailer for Michael Dougherty’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The sequel follows Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla (2014) and Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island (2017), setting up for a clash between the two iconic monsters in Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong in 2020.

Warner Bros.' “Monsterverse” has been one of the few non-superhero based cinematic universes to be met with critical and financial success, proving the lasting appeal of these characters for modern audiences. Dougherty, who directed the holiday cult-classic Trick 'r Treat and Krampus, is joining the world of blockbuster filmmaking with his take on the Japanese lizard who first made his debut in Ishiro Honda’s Gojira (1954).
Despite some audience complaints about the film’s pacing and human characters, Edwards’ Godzilla successfully brought back the moodiness, scale and war-tinged dread of Honda’s original film. Dougherty is faced with not only following in Edwards' footsteps but living up to the long legacy of the Godzilla franchise, 29 Japanese films total, and the various monsters it incorporated. The trailer, which was one of the best pieces of marketing to emerge from this year’s Comic-Con, makes it apparent that Dougherty isn’t only up to the challenge, but may very well exceed all expectations in his efforts to showcase the majesty of monsters.

'The Story of Our Home'

The South Korean film festival saw the country's first ever public screening of a film from the North, the Pyongyang Film Festival award winner 'The Story of Our Home.'

On July 15, over 1,000 people gathered on the lawn of Bucheon City Hall, Gyeonggi Province, for South Korea's first ever public screening of a North Korean film.
Since the Korean War ended in 1953, cross-border civilian contact has been banned unless authorized by the governments of the two Koreas. Firewalls prevent South Koreans from visiting North Korean websites while written requests must be approved for accessing Northern films—which are classified as "special material"—at the state-backed Korean Film Archive in Seoul.
The outdoor screening of The Story of Our Home, a family drama directed by Ri Yun-ho that won Best Film at the 15th Pyongyang Film Festival in 2016. It is among nine titles including three features and six shorts that were shown during the 21st Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival. Organizers of Asia's largest genre film event announced that South Korean authorities approved the North Korean film showcase on July 10, which was just two days before it kicked off on July 12..........

Joaquin Phoenix's Joker Origin Movie a Go at Warner Bros.

Phoenix recently finalized his deal to star as Batman's iconic arch-nemesis in this villain origin story.

The Joker origin movie is officially a go at Warner Bros.

Joaquin Phoenix recently finalized his deal to star as the arch-nemesis of Batman and shooting is set to begin in September in New York.

Todd Phillips is directing the film and co-wrote the script, which the studio describes as being an “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.” Scott Silver co-wrote the script.

Warners has yet to stake out a release date for the film, which goes against the grain of most comic book movies that have flags planted years in advance. But the Joker stand-alone pic is meant to be different from other comic book superhero movies.

‘The Name’: Ren Komai’s performance raises a multilayered drama

What’s in a name? On one level, it’s how you identify yourself to yourself (as in dorky name, dorky self-image). On another, it’s your social calling card, your link to family, going back generations (or not, if an ancestor decided to exchange one name for another).
The hero of “The Name,” Akihiro Toda’s engaging multilayered drama, has abandoned all that. Living in a crumbling old house in the countryside and working as a laborer at a recycling plant, he is Masao Nakamura (Kanji Tsuda), but, at certain times and places, he goes by other, fake names........

'Ant-Man and the Wasp'

Elsewhere, 'The First Purge' scares up $31 million, while the new Whitney Houston documentary sings with $1.3 million and 'Won't You Be My Neighbor?' becomes the top-grossing doc of the year so far.

Ant-Man and the Wasp may have leveled off a bit in its North American box-office debut, but it had no trouble crushing the competition over the weekend with $76 million — or coming in 33 percent ahead of the first Ant-Man as Disney and Marvel Studios cement the standing of another stand-alone franchise.

Overseas, the pesky superhero and his new female partner, The Wasp, buzzed to $85 million for a global start of $161 million. The sequel, laced with plenty of comedy, is pacing 45 percent ahead of Ant-Man internationally. South Korea led with a mighty $20.9 million, including previews........

'Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,' 'Incredibles 2,' 'The First Purge'

Searing temperatures in the Northeast and Midwest likely helped fuel the boom, along with Independence Day newcomer 'The First Purge.'

There were major fireworks at the July Fourth box office this year as revenue reached its highest level in five years, including an uptick of 29 percent over 2017.

Searing temperatures in the Northeast and Midwest were no doubt a factor in the stronger-than-usual showing. On Wednesday, heat advisories and heat warnings affected more than 94 million people.

Independence Day is historically a mixed bag when it comes to moviegoing, with many consumers otherwise occupied. It also helped that Universal decided to open The First Purge on Wednesday..........
