Olivia de Havilland, Sophisticated Star of Hollywood's Golden Age, Dies at 104

The two-time Oscar winner, so memorable in 'Gone With the Wind,' 'The Adventures of Robin Hood,' 'The Snake Pit' and 'The Heiress,' broke free of Warner Bros. with a watershed court triumph in the 1940s.

Olivia de Havilland, the delicate beauty and last remaining star of Gone With the Wind who received her two acting Oscars after helping to take down Hollywood’s studio system with a landmark legal victory in the 1940s, died Sunday. She was 104.
De Havilland died of natural causes at her home in Paris, where she had lived for more than 60 years, publicist Lisa Goldberg announced.............

Disney Unschedules 'Mulan,' Pushes Back 'Avatar' and 'Star Wars' Films a Year

The moves come as the vast majority of cinemas in the U.S. remain closed due to a surge in COVID-19 cases in California and other states.

Disney has taken Mulan off the theatrical release calendar amid the ongoing pandemic and a surge in COVID-19 cases across the U.S.
The adventure epic, directed by Niki Caro, had been set to hit theaters on Aug. 21. Presently, however, the vast majority of cinemas in the U.S. remain closed. Mulan had previously been scheduled to open in late March and then was pushed to July 24.
Disney didn't provide further comment regarding Mulan's fate beyond saying that the live-action adventure epic was being undated. While the company has been a champion of the theatrical experience, it is also investing heavily in its new streaming service, Disney+..............

Christopher Nolan's 'Tenet' Delays Early August Release Amid Ongoing Coronavirus Crisis

As Hollywood grapples with a new normal, the Warner Bros. tentpole is no longer expected to get a conventional release and is likely to launch first in overseas markets.


The Aug. 12 release of Christopher Nolan's Tenet has been delayed due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis and a surge in cases in some parts of the United States, Warner Bros. announced Monday.
As Hollywood grapples with a new normal brought on by the pandemic, the $200 million tentpole is no longer expected to get a conventional release and is likely to open first in overseas markets. And in the U.S., it could go out first in cities where cinemas can safely reopen, versus nationwide. Warners is expected to announce its new plan in the coming days.......

Foreign Box Office: South Korea's 'Peninsula' Bows to Big $19M-$20M

The movie's strong performance in select Asian markets is welcome news for the film business amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

South Korean filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho’s Peninsula — a follow-up to the 2016 cult zombie action flick Train to Busan — scored $19 million to $20 million in its international debut in a much-needed boost for the box office, according to early industry estimates.
That includes more than $13 million to $14 million in South Korea despite capacity limitations and ongoing concerns amid the novel coronavirus. The film also launched over the weekend in four other Asian markets, including Taiwan..........

Netflix Takes 'SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run' for International Markets

The film had originally been scheduled to hit the big screen on Aug. 7

Netflix has acquired Paramount and Nickelodeon's The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run for international markets, excluding China where the streaming giant has no presence.
Domestically, the film is bypassing a theatrical release and will instead debut on premium VOD in early 2021 before soaking up an exclusive spot on CBS All Access, ViacomCBS previously said. 
In Canada, the movie is understood to get a theatrical release and will then also be streaming on Netflix........

Ennio Morricone, Prolific Italian Composer for the Movies, Dies at 91

Renowned for scoring Sergio Leone’s spaghetti Westerns, the Oscar winner also produced the sounds and music for 'Days of Heaven,' 'The Mission,' 'Cinema Paradiso' and 'The Hateful Eight.'

Ennio Morricone, the Oscar winner whose haunting, inventive scores expertly accentuated the simmering, dialogue-free tension of the spaghetti Westerns directed by Sergio Leone, has died. He was 91. 
The Italian composer, who scored more than 500 films — seven for his countryman Leone after they had met as kids in elementary school — died in Rome following complications from a fall last week in which he broke his femur...........
