Oscars Diversity: Historic Firsts for Non-Acting Categories and Ceremony Accessibility

Chloe Zhao became the first woman of color to win best director, among other non-acting categories that saw diversity firsts at the 93rd Academy Awards.

#OscarsSoWhite was coined by April Reign in 2015 to describe the lack of diversity among the 20 acting nominees, but when it came to inclusion at the 2021 Oscars, it was categories behind the camera that saw multiple milestones take place.

Chloe Zhao is now the first woman of color (and second woman overall) to win best director..............

Box Office: 'Godzilla vs. Kong' Roars to Pandemic-Best $390.2M Globally

'Godzilla vs. Kong'



The fourth installment in Legendary's MonsterVerse has hit $80.5 million domestically and $309.7 million overseas.

Godzilla vs. Kong has stomped past $390 million at the global box office to become the top-grossing Hollywood movie of the pandemic after besting the $365 million earned last fall by fellow Warner Bros.' release Tenet................

ArcLight Cinemas and Pacific Theatres to Close

The two brands operated more than 300 screens in California, including the coveted Cinerama Dome in Hollywood.

In a blow for Southern California moviegoers — and those in Los Angeles in particular — the ArcLight Cinemas and Pacific Theatres are closing all of their 16 locations for good after seeing their business decimated by the pandemic.

ArcLight's stable includes the prized Cinerama Dome Hollywood. The Dome, built in 1963 by Pacific Theatres' parent company the Decurion Corp., is the crown jewel of the small theater complex that was later reconstructed in the early 2000s................

China Box Office: 'Godzilla Vs. Kong' Knocked Down Again by Local Comedy 'Sister'

Legendary and Warner Bros. monster tentpole has been slowed by the success of the low-budget Chinese sleeper hit, but it's still on track to finish its run with over $180 million.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment's Godzilla Vs. Kong suffered a second stinging defeat at China's box office over the weekend, going down again to Sister, a local drama that was reportedly made for just $5 million.

Sister, which is produced and distributed by Shanghai-based Lian Ray Pictures, among others, pulled in $20.8 million in its second weekend, a decline of 61 percent from its $53.5 million opening a week ago. The film has earned just shy of $100 million to date, according to data from Artisan Gateway..................

Vincent Chin was beaten to death with a baseball bat 39 years ago, a galvanizing incident for the modern Asian American civil rights movement but an event that has been lost to history for most outside the community...........
