Marvel
'Ant-Man and the Wasp'

The Paul Rudd superhero pic scored Marvel's fourth-biggest China opening ever, while Warner Bros' 'The Meg' climbed towards $150 million.

Finally opening seven weeks after its U.S. debut, Disney and Marvel's Ant-Man and the Wasp racked up a strong $68 million start at the Chinese box office over the weekend.
Only two Hollywood titles — Avengers: Infinity War ($201 million) and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom($134 million) — have scored bigger openings in the massive China market this year.
The Paul Rudd superhero sequel is pacing well ahead of the first Ant-Man film, which opened in China to $43 million in 2015. The big China bow also lifted the sequel past its predecessor at the worldwide box office: Ant-Man 2's global haul now sits at $544 million compared to the first film's $519 million final total.
The outsized start also is the fourth-biggest debut ever for a Marvel film in the Middle Kingdom, trailing only Avengers: Age of UltronAvengers: Infinity War and Captain America: Civil War.
Ant-Man 2's China tally included $7.2 million from IMAX, which is the giant screen operator's biggest August opening-weekend to date........

Director Danny Boyle Exits Next James Bond Film

The filmmaker is leaving due to creative differences.
Danny Boyle will no longer be leading 007 on his next mission. The producers of the James Bond franchise and star Daniel Craig made the announcement Tuesday that Boyle was exiting the project, which he had been set to direct.

"Michael G. Wilson, Barbara Broccoli and Daniel Craig today announced that due to creative differences Danny Boyle has decided to no longer direct Bond 25," the official James Bond Twitter account tweeted.

Boyle revealed in March that he was eyeing the next Bond film, which he was set to tackle after directing an untitled comedy starring Lily James and Kate McKinnon, which opens in September 2019. The filmmaker is a longtime 007 fan, and included Craig’s Bond in the opening of the 2012 London Olympics, which Boyle directed. Boyle's Trainspotting collaborator John Hodge was writing a script for the next Bond pic based on an idea from the helmer. A previous draft was written by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who penned Craig's Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall and Spectre..........

‘Killing for the Prosecution’: A complex crime drama stuffed with exposition / 映画『検察側の罪人』予告2

‘Killing for the Prosecution’: A complex crime drama stuffed with exposition

Once a maker of Hollywood-style sci-fi (“Gunhed,” 1989) and noir (“Painted Desert,” 1993), Masato Harada has become a director of films about fact-based, character-testing group missions, be it police routing radicals from a Karuizawa villa (“The Choice of Hercules,” 2002) or samurai fighting the biggest battle in Japanese history (“Sekigahara,” 2017).
These films are fast-paced, densely plotted odes to the Japanese organization man (and, peripherally, woman), with everyone from the rank-and-filers to the leaders being dedicated, tough-minded pros. The lazy, paper-shuffling salaryman of comedy (and reality) is nowhere in sight.....

THE MEG - Official Trailer #1 [HD]

Jason Statham (“Spy,” “Furious 7,” “The Expendables” films) and award-winning Chinese actress Li Bingbing (“Transformers: Age of Extinction,” “Forbidden Kingdom,” “The Message”) star in the science fiction action thriller “The Meg,” directed by Jon Turteltaub (the “National Treasure” movies, “Last Vegas”).

In the film, a deep-sea submersible—part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific…with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew—and the ocean itself—from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. What no one could have imagined is that, years before, Taylor had encountered this same terrifying creature. Now, teamed with Suyin, he must confront his fears and risk his own life to save everyone trapped below…bringing him face to face once more with the greatest and largest predator of all time.

Rounding out the international main cast of “The Meg” are Rainn Wilson (TV’s “The Office,” “Super”), Ruby Rose (“xXx: Return of Xander Cage,” TV’s “Orange is the New Black”), Winston Chao (“Skiptrace,” “Kabali”), Page Kennedy (TV’s “Rush Hour”), Jessica McNamee (“The Vow,” TV’s “Sirens”), Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (“The BFG,” TV’s “The Missing”), Robert Taylor (“Focus,” TV’s “Longmire”), New Zealander Cliff Curtis (“The Dark Horse,” “Risen,” TV’s “Fear the Walking Dead”), Sophia Shuya Cai (“Somewhere Only We Know”), and Masi Oka (TV’s “Hawaii Five-0,” “Heroes”).

Turteltaub directed the film from a screenplay by Dean Georgaris and Jon Hoeber & Erich Hoeber, based on the New York Times best-selling novel by Steve Alten. Lorenzo di Bonaventura (the “Transformers” films), Belle Avery (“Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead”) and Colin Wilson (“Suicide Squad,” “Avatar”) produced the film, with Gerald R. Molen, Randy Greenberg, Wayne Wei Jiang, and Barrie Osborne serving as executive producers.

Turteltaub’s behind-the-scenes team included Oscar-nominated director of photography Tom Stern (“Changeling,” “Sully,” “American Sniper,” “The Hunger Games”), Oscar-winning production designer Grant Major (“The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” “X-Men- Apocalypse”), editor Steven Kemper (“Salt,” “Mission: Impossible II,” “Face/Off”) and costume designer Amanda Neale (“Truth,” “Pete’s Dragon,” “What We Do in the Shadows”).

Filming on “The Meg” was accomplished on location in China and New Zealand.

“The Meg” is a presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures and Gravity Pictures. It is production of di Bonaventura Pictures, Apelles Entertainment, Maeday Productions, Inc., and Flagship Entertainment, in association with Beijing Digital Impression (BDI) Film, Inc.
“The Meg” will be distributed in China by Gravity Pictures, and throughout the rest of the world by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Entertainment Company. It is slated for release on August 10, 2018.

Box Office: 'Crazy Rich Asians' Looking Rich With $5.5M-$6M Wednesday

Sanja Bucko/Warner Bros.
'Crazy Rich Asians'

Jon M. Chu's rom-com is the first Hollywood studio film in 25 years to feature an all-Westernized Asian cast.

Warner Bros. and director Jon M. Chu's high-profile Crazy Rich Asians is off to a rich start at the box office, where it is pacing to earn at least $5.5 million to $6 million on Wednesday, according to early estimates.
That puts the rom-com on course for a five-day debut in the $28 million-plus range, with some box-office observers predicting it will top $30 million. Warners insiders are being more conservative in putting the opening at $25 million-plus. So far, the film is doing best in Asian markets and big cities, according to the studio and comScore.
Crazy Rich Asians is expected to best STXfilms and Peter Berg's male-fueled Mile 22, starring Mark Wahlberg, and Studio 8's prehistoric adventure-drama Alpha, both of which bow Friday.
Chu's modestly budgeted $30 million film, based on Kevin Kwan's best-selling 2013 novel of the same name, is the first Hollywood studio movie since 1993's The Joy Luck Club to feature an all-Westernized Asian cast. Warners hosted paid sneaks in more than 350 theaters across the country last Thursday to further increase the profile of the pic. Grosses from the sneaks were folded into Tuesday night's previews, and are believed to total about $350,000......

Hollywood's Child Stars and the Sketchy World of On-Set Tutors

Illustrations by: Hartley Lin

From "trafficking in conspiracy theories" to hawking their own music, teachers hired for film and TV projects can sometimes short-change young actors' education: "I don't think anyone expects kids to actually learn."

In 2014, producer David Kaplan noticed that a child actor on his set was receiving a rather unconventional education.
"We found ourselves with a studio teacher who, among other things, trafficked in conspiracy theories — one of her favorites being that Hitler was still alive in a bunker somewhere in Argentina," Kaplan recalls.
The indie producer of such films as It Comes at Night began scrambling to find a replacement and zeroed in on a veteran named Marty Carlin. Hours away from making the switch, Kaplan learned from press reports that the man they thought they were about to hire was,
in fact, an impostor, posing as Carlin. "Needless to say, it was a particularly grim day on that set," he says, declining to name the production for legal reasons.
Though Kaplan's predicament may have been extreme, producers concur that there's
a disconcertingly wide spectrum of quality
when it comes to on-set tutors, ranging from the good to the bad
to the downright dubious. Given how difficult it is for child stars to get a decent education while shouldering the demands of an adult job like film and television acting, it's
no surprise that so few wind up at Ivy League colleges (Natalie Portman, Claire Danes and now Harvard-bound Yara Shahidi are among the notable exceptions). Add to that the fact that the world of on-set tutors is rife with pitfalls — from unsettling characters to questionable practices.......

Sensei Kunshu’: Looking for love in all the wrong places

Student crushes on teachers are a pop culture staple (ask any Van Halen fan). In real life, they’re a minefield, with trip wires becoming ever more sensitive.
“Sensei Kunshu,” Momoko Koda’s hit manga about a teenage girl (Minami Hamabe) goo-goo-eyed over a handsome math teacher (Ryoma Takeuchi), harks back to the innocent days before YouTube exposes and Twitter autos-da-fe. Instead, schoolgirl fantasies rule, leavened by the comedy of awkwardness and embarrassment, exaggerated to the human limit. Want to see actors doing their darndest to imitate comic book characters? This is your film.
“Sensei Kunshu” is also a reminder that Western trends can be slow to arrive here. In American films and TV heroines now range from the admirably strong (Wonder Woman) to the comically resilient (Kimmy Schmidt). In “Sensei Kunshu” the moony heroine, Ayuha Samaru, is as dim and inconstant as an expiring light bulb. All she knows for sure is that she really wants a boyfriend......
