"It's hard to find a family in America that's not touched by [the opioid] epidemic in one way or another," producer Nina Jacobson told The Hollywood Reporter about the movie following a family whose recovering son leaves rehab to spend Christmas at home.

Addiction drama Ben is Back tells the story of one family dealing with the opioid crisis ravaging America, as the eponymous recovering addict son Ben (Lucas Hedges) leaves rehab to spend Christmas at home and finds himself facing familiar dangers and challenges.
But the filmmakers hope the movie, which also stars Julia Roberts as Ben's mother will have broad appeal despite its smaller scale.
"It's hard to find a family in America that's not touched by this epidemic in one way or another," producer Nina Jacobson told The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the New York premiere of Ben is Back earlier this month. "And yet it's very hard to talk about it all at once and what you wanted was a story like what Peter wrote which was emotional and a page turner and an emotional thriller in a way that has a watchability about it and still has enormous compassion and complexity in how it looks at this struggle."......

'Los Reyes': Film Review | IDFA 2018

Football and Chola in 'Los Reyes.'

The latest collaboration between Chilean directors Ivan Osnovikoff and Bettina Perut won the runner-up prize when premiering at the Dutch documentary giant.

It's a case of four wheels good, four legs even better in Los Reyes, Chilean duo Ivan Osnovikoff and Bettina Perut's appealing study of stray dogs and skateboarders sharing a downtown Santiago park. Built four-square around the considerable screen presence of inseparable best-pal canine co-leads Chola and Football, the German co-production is low on incidents but high on atmosphere and unassuming charm.
Having its world premiere in the main competition at Amsterdam's IDFA, the pair's eighth directorial collaboration took the runner-up special jury award and ranked high among the most viewed titles in the industry videotheque, the latter a reliable harbinger of a busy festival career. Art house play in receptive territories is also potentially in the cards, though bookers and patrons should be made aware that the measured style of Los Reyes — no music, no voiceover, no explanatory title-cards — veers toward the austere.....

10 Hidden Details You Missed In Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald

The Crimes of Grindelwald is the second film in the Harry Potter prequel series. Set in 1927 in Paris, it follows the rise of Johnny Depp’s Grindelwald and how the forces of good are trying to stop him. This movie is packed to the brim with plot points, characters and setups that you may have missed a lot of the smaller and nuanced moments. For instance, a lot of fans and critics were crying foul about how Jacob came back and that his explanation felt a little weak. But a line in the first film actually backs up his statement! J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books and these prequel films, actually revealed in 2016 that Grindelwald is a shapeshifter and that Colin Farrell’s Percival Graves never existed, which was a little tease for the opening of the second film! At one point,
Grindelwald mentions the phrase “for the greater good” and only book fans will understand that reference. It’ll definitely make you look at Dumbledore in a different light! There are two names in the film, Rosier and Travers, that will also sound familiar to those familiar with all the minor characters in the Potterverse. We have our first canonical look at the philosopher’s stone in Paris and reveal the truth about who Flamel really was. We see the Blood Oath scene, which tells us why Albus can’t fight Grindelwald and the actors in that scene may be familiar to some. Grindelwald gets a peek into the future and shows his followers the second world war. But the war has another important meaning to Grindelwald himself. We get an easter egg nod to the Black family and see the Ministry of Magic using more traditional forms of letter delivery. Finally, was J.K. Rowling teasing the Aurelius reveal two years ago?? Maybe! Featuring: Entry 1 POSITIVE MEMORIES Entry 2 SHAPESHIFTER Entry 3 FOR THE GREATER GOOD Entry 4 ROSIER AND TRAVERS Entry 5 THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE Entry 6 BLOOD OATH Entry 7 1945 Entry 8 NIGELLUS Entry 9 MINISTRY OWLS

‘Killing’: A modern take on a samurai staple

Screening in competition at this year’s Venice Film Festival, “Killing” is veteran provocateur Shinya Tsukamoto’s first venture into the samurai genre. Made, like most of Tsukamoto’s films, on a tiny budget and tight schedule, it does not attempt the scale of classics like “Seven Samurai” (1954) or “Yojimbo” (1961).
Instead, Tsukamoto’s camera moves in close to capture the weight of the swords, the razor lethality of the blades and the swirling chaos of the action. Some of the fight scenes, with their slowly gathering menace and swift death, recall Akira Kurosawa’s afore-mentioned masterpieces, but Tsukamoto’s overall approach is more intimate and less heroic. As he has said in interviews, the film is the antithesis of the classic samurai movie, in which good battles .....

'Robin Hood' and Making a War Movie Out of a Folk Hero

Screengrab/YouTube
'Robin Hood'

The film takes a page from 'American Sniper' — to its detriment.
[This story contains spoilers for Lionsgate/Summit's Robin Hood.]

If you feel compelled to yank Robin Hood, English folk hero of yore, out of the past and into the present, you can try one of two tacks. First, you can treat him as a distant cousin to Oliver Queen or perhaps Clint Barton. Second, you can remake him as an analogue to late Navy SEAL sniper and Chris Kyle. Director Otto Bathurst’s new adaptation of Robin Hood’s legend, simply titled Robin Hood, hews closer to the former approach, in keeping with the growing trend of making super those heroes who aren’t, but begins by functioning like a war movie.

Specifically, the pic functions like an Iraq War film, at least to start. That reference to Kyle isn’t an offhanded joke: Robin Hood’s first chapter reads as a folkloric remake of American Sniper, long before Bathurst returns us from the frontlines of the Crusades back to not-so-merry old England, where Robin Hood’s primary plot unfolds. Frankly, the folklore is absent from this stretch of the movie, replaced by grit, washed-out color schemes and costume design that’s really obviously meant to mimic desert fatigues. It’s distracting. Most of all, it’s just straight-up bizarre......

Weekend Box Office: 'The Grinch' Wins With $66M; 'Overlord,' 'Girl in the Spider's Web' Snubbed

Courtesy of Illumination and Universal Pictures
'The Grinch'

The massive Woolsey Fire results in the Los Angeles area being slightly down in terms of box-office revenue; overseas, Sony's 'Venom' opens to a massive $111 million in China.

Hollywood's obsession with reviving dormant film franchises was met with mixed messages at the weekend box office.
Christmas came early for Illumination and Universal as The Grinch, the second big-screen adaptation of the classic Dr. Seuss holiday tale after Ron Howard's 2000 film, opened to a pleasing $66 million from 4,414 North American theaters despite mediocre reviews (it fared better with audiences, earning an A- CinemaScore). Voiced this time out by Benedict Cumberbatch, the CG-animated pic is the first family event film of the year-end corridor.
On the other hand, The Girl in the Spider's Web, starring Claire Foy, opened to a disappointing $8 million from 2,929 locations in a blow to Sony, MGM and New Regency's attempt to reboot the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series. The $43 million film, dismissed by many critics, is currently tied withA Star Is Born, now in its sixth weekend, for fifth place. The order won't be decided until Monday morning.
Directed by Fede Alvarez, Girl in the Spider's Web is likewise struggling overseas, where it took in $6.2 million from 49 markets for an early foreign total of $8.2 million and $16.3 million globally.
In 2011, Sony released the English-language adaptation of the first novel in the Millennium series, directed by David Fincher and starring Rooney Mara as Salander opposite Daniel Craig. The film debuted domestically to $12.7 million in December 2011 on its way to earning $230 million globally, not adjusted for inflation. The original Millennium trilogy of films was adapted for the screen by Danish filmmaker Niels Arden Oplev and starred Noomi Rapace as Salander in a breakout role. The first film was released in February 2009, with sequels in September and November of the same year, both directed by Daniel Alfredsson......

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - The Magic Continues - Warner Bros. UK

Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” is the second of five all new adventures in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World™. At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne).
But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings. In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans,
Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world. The film features an ensemble cast led by Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner, Claudia Kim, William Nadylam, Kevin Guthrie, Carmen Ejogo, Poppy Corby-Tuech, with Jude Law and Johnny Depp. “Fantastic Beasts:
The Crimes of Grindelwald” is directed by David Yates, from a screenplay by J.K. Rowling. The film is produced by David Heyman, J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram. Tim Lewis, Neil Blair, Rick Senat and Danny Cohen serve as executive producers.
The film reunites the behind-the-scenes creative team from the first “Fantastic Beasts” film, including Oscar-winning director of photography Philippe Rousselot (“A River Runs Through It”), three-time Oscar-winning production designer Stuart Craig (“The English Patient,” “Dangerous Liaisons,” “Gandhi,” the “Harry Potter” films), four-time Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood (“Chicago,” “Memoirs of a Geisha,”
“Alice in Wonderland,” “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”), and Yates’ longtime editor Mark Day (the last four “Harry Potter” films). The music is by eight-time Oscar nominee James Newton Howard (“Defiance,” “Michael Clayton,” “The Hunger Games” films). Slated for release beginning November 16, 2018, the film will be distributed worldwide in 2D and 3D in select theatres and IMAX by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

China Box Office: 'Nutcracker' Opens to $12 Million During Another Downbeat Weekend

Disney Movie Trailers/YouTube
'The Nutcracker and The Four Realms'

The biggest Chinese release during the frame, Donnie Yen's 'Frozen Hero 2' flopped with $3.6 million, prompting an ugly war of words between the production company and actor on social media.

Disney's The Nutcracker and the Four Realms topped China's box office over the weekend with a decidedly less-than-festive $10.9 million opening haul.
The downbeat performance from the pricey Disney holiday title wasn't nearly enough to pull the Chinese film market out of its ongoing fall-season funk.........

Asian presence dominates Tokyo International Film Festival red carpet

The 31st Tokyo International Film Festival kicked off Thursday with a notable dearth of Hollywood stars, namely the two who star in the opening movie.
Despite Lady Gaga’s professed love of Japan, the American singer didn’t show up as had been rumored to promote “A Star Is Born,” and neither did her co-star and the film’s director, Bradley Cooper.
The lack of high-profile Hollywood names who usually populate the red carpets of major film festivals, however, left more time and attention for Asian guests.
Despite the evening gowns, tuxedos and Mercedes-Benz limousines, a casual atmosphere prevailed at the three-hour ceremony. TIFF ambassador Mayu Matsuoka noted the event was taking place at Roppongi Hills, a venue “that’s usually a shopping area,” but this mall included a zombie horde, a nervous black-and-white cat, two sets of robots and Kumamoto Prefecture mascot Kumamon — though he was dressed to the nines....

‘Every Day a Good Day’: The wonder of tea with Kirin Kiki 『日日是好日』予告編

attended my first tea ceremony decades ago, as part of a company orientation. Kneeling on the floor, I sat in the formal seiza position, stumbled through the motions and sipped the thick green tea. Just as the pain in my legs was reaching a crescendo, I bowed to my host and hobbled out. I had next to no idea what it all meant. A box ticked off in the Japanese cultural experiences list?
Based on a collection of essays by Noriko Morishita, Tatsushi Omori’s “Every Day a Good Day” knowledgeably and gorgeously shows how tea ceremony is far more than a feudal-era relic trotted out for bemused observers. For the heroine and her fellow followers of sadō (the way of tea), it is a shining embodiment of mindfulness — the philosophy and practice of living in the moment that is both timeless and trendy. Also, instead of going through the prescribed motions by rote, they use all five senses to experience beauty to the fullest at every seasonal turn. And the matcha that is the end product of their labors looks delicious. (Though as a fan of matcha in just about anything, I may be prejudiced.)........
