‘Killing’: A modern take on a samurai staple

Screening in competition at this year’s Venice Film Festival, “Killing” is veteran provocateur Shinya Tsukamoto’s first venture into the samurai genre. Made, like most of Tsukamoto’s films, on a tiny budget and tight schedule, it does not attempt the scale of classics like “Seven Samurai” (1954) or “Yojimbo” (1961).
Instead, Tsukamoto’s camera moves in close to capture the weight of the swords, the razor lethality of the blades and the swirling chaos of the action. Some of the fight scenes, with their slowly gathering menace and swift death, recall Akira Kurosawa’s afore-mentioned masterpieces, but Tsukamoto’s overall approach is more intimate and less heroic. As he has said in interviews, the film is the antithesis of the classic samurai movie, in which good battles .....

'Robin Hood' and Making a War Movie Out of a Folk Hero

Screengrab/YouTube
'Robin Hood'

The film takes a page from 'American Sniper' — to its detriment.
[This story contains spoilers for Lionsgate/Summit's Robin Hood.]

If you feel compelled to yank Robin Hood, English folk hero of yore, out of the past and into the present, you can try one of two tacks. First, you can treat him as a distant cousin to Oliver Queen or perhaps Clint Barton. Second, you can remake him as an analogue to late Navy SEAL sniper and Chris Kyle. Director Otto Bathurst’s new adaptation of Robin Hood’s legend, simply titled Robin Hood, hews closer to the former approach, in keeping with the growing trend of making super those heroes who aren’t, but begins by functioning like a war movie.

Specifically, the pic functions like an Iraq War film, at least to start. That reference to Kyle isn’t an offhanded joke: Robin Hood’s first chapter reads as a folkloric remake of American Sniper, long before Bathurst returns us from the frontlines of the Crusades back to not-so-merry old England, where Robin Hood’s primary plot unfolds. Frankly, the folklore is absent from this stretch of the movie, replaced by grit, washed-out color schemes and costume design that’s really obviously meant to mimic desert fatigues. It’s distracting. Most of all, it’s just straight-up bizarre......

Weekend Box Office: 'The Grinch' Wins With $66M; 'Overlord,' 'Girl in the Spider's Web' Snubbed

'The Grinch'

The massive Woolsey Fire results in the Los Angeles area being slightly down in terms of box-office revenue; overseas, Sony's 'Venom' opens to a massive $111 million in China.

Hollywood's obsession with reviving dormant film franchises was met with mixed messages at the weekend box office.
Christmas came early for Illumination and Universal as The Grinch, the second big-screen adaptation of the classic Dr. Seuss holiday tale after Ron Howard's 2000 film, opened to a pleasing $66 million from 4,414 North American theaters despite mediocre reviews (it fared better with audiences, earning an A- CinemaScore). Voiced this time out by Benedict Cumberbatch, the CG-animated pic is the first family event film of the year-end corridor.
On the other hand, The Girl in the Spider's Web, starring Claire Foy, opened to a disappointing $8 million from 2,929 locations in a blow to Sony, MGM and New Regency's attempt to reboot the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series. The $43 million film, dismissed by many critics, is currently tied withA Star Is Born, now in its sixth weekend, for fifth place. The order won't be decided until Monday morning.
Directed by Fede Alvarez, Girl in the Spider's Web is likewise struggling overseas, where it took in $6.2 million from 49 markets for an early foreign total of $8.2 million and $16.3 million globally.
In 2011, Sony released the English-language adaptation of the first novel in the Millennium series, directed by David Fincher and starring Rooney Mara as Salander opposite Daniel Craig. The film debuted domestically to $12.7 million in December 2011 on its way to earning $230 million globally, not adjusted for inflation. The original Millennium trilogy of films was adapted for the screen by Danish filmmaker Niels Arden Oplev and starred Noomi Rapace as Salander in a breakout role. The first film was released in February 2009, with sequels in September and November of the same year, both directed by Daniel Alfredsson......

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - The Magic Continues - Warner Bros. UK

Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” is the second of five all new adventures in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World™. At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne).
But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings. In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans,
Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world. The film features an ensemble cast led by Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner, Claudia Kim, William Nadylam, Kevin Guthrie, Carmen Ejogo, Poppy Corby-Tuech, with Jude Law and Johnny Depp. “Fantastic Beasts:
The Crimes of Grindelwald” is directed by David Yates, from a screenplay by J.K. Rowling. The film is produced by David Heyman, J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram. Tim Lewis, Neil Blair, Rick Senat and Danny Cohen serve as executive producers.
The film reunites the behind-the-scenes creative team from the first “Fantastic Beasts” film, including Oscar-winning director of photography Philippe Rousselot (“A River Runs Through It”), three-time Oscar-winning production designer Stuart Craig (“The English Patient,” “Dangerous Liaisons,” “Gandhi,” the “Harry Potter” films), four-time Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood (“Chicago,” “Memoirs of a Geisha,”
“Alice in Wonderland,” “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”), and Yates’ longtime editor Mark Day (the last four “Harry Potter” films). The music is by eight-time Oscar nominee James Newton Howard (“Defiance,” “Michael Clayton,” “The Hunger Games” films). Slated for release beginning November 16, 2018, the film will be distributed worldwide in 2D and 3D in select theatres and IMAX by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

China Box Office: 'Nutcracker' Opens to $12 Million During Another Downbeat Weekend

Disney Movie Trailers/YouTube
'The Nutcracker and The Four Realms'

The biggest Chinese release during the frame, Donnie Yen's 'Frozen Hero 2' flopped with $3.6 million, prompting an ugly war of words between the production company and actor on social media.

Disney's The Nutcracker and the Four Realms topped China's box office over the weekend with a decidedly less-than-festive $10.9 million opening haul.
The downbeat performance from the pricey Disney holiday title wasn't nearly enough to pull the Chinese film market out of its ongoing fall-season funk.........

French film 'Amanda' takes top prize at Tokyo International Film Festival

French director Mikhael Hers’ family drama, “Amanda,” was awarded the Grand Prix at the 31st Tokyo International Film Festival on Friday.
Edoardo De Angelis, meanwhile, took top directing honors for his emotional Italian drama “The Vice of Hope,” a film that also won his wife, Pina Turco, an award for best actress. In the last of the top prizes, Jesper Christensen picked up the best actor award for his portrayal of the proud but poor patriarch of a 19th-century farming family in the Danish film “Before the Frost.”
Although all winners attended the festival’s opening on Oct. 25, many recipients were absent from the closing ceremony, which was held at Ex Theater Roppongi, and had to convey their appreciation via video feed from their respective home countries. The Grand Prix was accepted on behalf of director Hers by French Ambassador Laurent Pic, who has been tasked with sending it back to Paris..........
